This image shows a virtual section of the developing zebrafish brain vasculature in a 5-day old fish from the rear, or dorsal perspective. In addition to the blood vessels (cyan), a type of immune cells (macrophages in magenta) are also visualized. As the signal is quite dim for both those markers, the skin of the zebrafish can also be seen. Studying these data helps us understand how immune cells interact with the vasculature, such as when they touch each other to remove dead cells or signal to each other about their health state.

Technique: The image was acquired using a Zeiss Z.1 light-sheet fluorescence microscope with a Plan-Apochromat 20×/1.0 Corr nd=1.38 objective and a scientific complementary metal-oxide semiconductor detection unit. The two signals from stable transgenic lines were acquired subsequently and merged digitally. Maximum intensity projection and colouration were conducted using Fiji.

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.
