This image shows the developing brain vasculature in a three-day old zebrafish from the rear, or dorsal, view. As these data are 3D but shown in 2D, a depth-coded projection was used to show where blood vessels are in the 3D space. Yellow is closest to the viewer, then orange, magenta, and purple. Blue is the furthest away from the viewer. These data help us understand 3D relationships of blood vessels and how they are formed as we can see how they grow and change over time. The full width of the head in this image is about 600 micrometre, for context, a credit card is about 700 micrometre thick.

Technique: The image was acquired using a Zeiss Z.1 light-sheet fluorescence microscope with a Plan-Apochromat 20×/1.0 Corr nd=1.38 objective and a scientific complementary metal-oxide semiconductor detection unit. Signal was from stable transgenic lines and colour-coded for depth and a maximum intensity projection was produced using Fiji.

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.
